Digital Citizenship
📝DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
📝Digital Citizenship means, engaging in appropriate and responsible behavior when using technology. It also means showing respect and responsibility for ourselves, and for others. When using technology, it should just focus on safe and respectful behavior in any online environment.
In order to teach and learn
about technology and use of technology, and the issues of technology use such
as misuse and abuse, they introduced nine elements of digital citizenship. The first element, Digital access
is the full electronic participation in society. Technology users need to know
that everyone has the same opportunities when it comes to technology. The goal
of digital citizens should be, to help and provide access to technology and
make sure that no one is denied. Another element is Digital commerce which
talks about the electronic buying and selling of goods online. Here, users
should be aware of the dangers and benefits of online buying and selling.
Digital citizens need to learn about how to be effective consumers in a
digital world. Digital communication is an electronic exchange of
information. The user must understand what is appropriate to share through
communicating via text, email, social media, video chat, etc. they must know to
make a good choice of the medium to communicate. Digital literacy is
another element that talks about the process of teaching and learning about
technology and the usage of technology. It says that every digital citizen must
know how to use various digital technologies and how to access the legitimacy
of web resources.
Another element is digital
etiquette which explains electronic standards of appropriate conduct
or procedure. It says that every digital citizen should know when to use
technology appropriately and always in a positive manner. The other important
element is digital law. We know that we must be abiding by the laws to
go through everything smoothly. So, this element says users should understand how to
share content legally, and respect ownership by citing. Users must know that
stealing or causing damage to other people's work is a crime. We know we have
rights for everything but with responsibility. In technology to we have digital
rights and responsibilities which talks about freedoms extended to everyone
in a digital world. Users have the right to privacy, and free speech et and with
the right also come responsibilities as well. The next element is about digital
health and wellness which focus on psychological well-being in a digital
technology world. This element says digital citizens must be aware of the
physical and psychological dangers of excessive internet usage. And the last
element is digital security (self-protection). It is about electronic
precautions to guarantee safety. Every user must know how to protect from virus
threats, backup data, and save the information with a password to protect from
outside harm force.
As a teacher, there are many
roles to take in digital citizenship. Teachers can teach and guide students
about those nine elements of digital citizenship such as the resources that are
authentic and remind students not to forget to cite the source. Another
is, that a teacher can do is, make aware of the students cyberbullying, what to do and what is not appropriate to upload, or what is legal and
illegal to upload on that particular website.
Digital citizens must
address, discuss, and understand the basic digital rights in the digital
world. And with digital rights comes responsibilities as well. For example, to the prevention of issues later, as a teacher, we must follow the digital rights
that before uploading or installing software in that particular network, must
discuss with other colleagues officially. We have freedom and rights to install
the digital and with that we have responsibilities as well.
Teaching digital citizenship
equips students with the knowledge, skills, and resources to succeed as lifetime learners and also helps them learn to engage within a digital
environment with responsibility and leave a meaningful impact on the lives of
others. To make a good digital citizen, the teacher has a bigger role to play.
To produce productive and helpful digital citizens teachers must take the following
roles; teach students that the goal should be giving digital access to every
individual in a society and they must be made aware of issues associated with
digital use and how to become effective users. They must be taught what
communication tool is best for what purpose. At the same time, learners must be
trained on how to learn in a digital society to learn anything, anywhere, and
anytime. Digital etiquette must be taught well so that they know the proper
usage of technology in a proper manner. They must be educated on how to share
content legally, and respect ownership by citing. They must be taught that
stealing or causing damage to other people's work is a crime. And the other
important thing students must be educated about is self-protection and digital health
and wellness. People tend to use the technology without knowing the
consequences of internet use, so students should be aware of it. Students must
keep in mind that they have the right to technology but with the
responsibility.
